About Us
Big Spud Daddy & the Guinness Aires is the result of Dennis and Sandy's fascination and love affair with the music of Ireland and Scotland. After years of playing Rock & Roll and R&B, traditional Celtic music offers new and unique challenges that is rewarding beyond expectations. Other musician friends became interested and suddenly we had a brand new group which models itself after Danu, Dervish and Old Blind Dogs, along with other modern bands that play traditional music with contemporary "twists" that bring new energy and passion to age old tunes and songs.

Dennis "Putz" Stearns....After 39 years of messing around with guitars, brushes with greatness in L.A. (1970's), a 15 yr. stint with a jazz big band, too many rock & roll bands to count...who could imagine finding musical nirvana in celtic music?!....and who could imagine that there are folks out there that enjoy what we're doing?!..amazing..extremely gratifying...Favorite drink-boozes of the british isles...favorite hobby-cooking...favorite diet-see food.

Ellie Fregni - My story started when someone slipped me a violin at an early age. I liked it, I was hooked. Soon one instrument wasn't enough. I started getting my fix on piano, then viola, then different styles, jazz, swing, bluegrass, blues, rock, and now Celtic. My college years were spent huddled in dark corners, alone with an instrument or cavorting with other instument players. Well meaning friends and family suggested I get a real job....but, it was too late. I now spend my time either surrounded by other music loving junkies or hooking small children into the musical lifestyle. Donations for the family can be sent to the spud recovery fund.

Sandy "doc" Savage (aka band mom)....My music career started in 5th grade when I had to "choose" an instrument for school. It was alto sax then through high school, tenor in college, then bari beyond med. school for rock & roll and r&b.........A few trips to Ireland, and I'm hooked on Celtic. Music that speaks through the soul....To save carrying a multitude of instruments, I've gone completely midi, using a breath sensitive wind synthesizer to cover penny whistle, flute, accordian, cello, and pipes, working through my self programmed sound patches. Modern technology, sweet!......Best paying band I've been in-Polka Queens(1976)...Favorite drink-boodles gin martini, extra dry, 2 olives with a twist...Favorite food group-chocolate...Favorite hobby-Alpacas!

The second to  newest Spud is Pete Brooks. Pete plays accoustic bass, and has a ton of experience.
He has an incredible ear, and his playing fits seamlessly into the Spudosphere.
When you hear this cat play, you may have to stop and try to remember what the band
sounded like without a bassist. And, when you meet Pete, you will soon realize
that he is just as crazy as the rest of the Spuds.  Pete also "doubles"... but not on another instrument per se.
One night at rehearsal, we discovered that he has an amazing talent as a whistler!  So now, we proudly feature Pete as he whilstles the first chorus of our rendition of, "Bird in the Tree"!

The Newest potato person is "Master of the Singing Bodhran", David J. Draeger.  David comes to us by way of the renowned, "Irish Brigade".  The singing part is due to his talent for extracting a wonderful range of timbres from such a simple instrument.  It might help that he makes all of his own tippers himself and markets them commercially.  Dave's affable personality and affection for Northern Ireland make him an interesting feller to have around... he is especially fond of Bushmill's whiskey!  Dave is quick to point out that the correct pronunciation of his drum rhymes with "moron".
